Scholarly Article Analysis

Scholarly Article Analysis
In an article titled “Rock Music: Dimensions of a Mass Medium-Meaning Production through Popular Music” Peter Wicke describes the direct correlation between consumers of music (mostly youth) and the strategies major music industries use to appeal to their consumers. The article was produced in the Canadian University Music Review Vol. 10.
I found this article to be very informative, as well as strengthening some of the arguments that have been brought up in class. For example, Wicke writes that “Teenagers . . . tend to be unaware of many song's lyrics and messages; most teenagers are attracted to popular records more by their overall sound and beat - or the performing group - than by their verbal content.” This is an idea that I found to be true in my “Music Memories #1” assignment. While growing up, I really did not care (or know) what the true meaning was of the songs I was listening to. Others have discussed this in class as well. It seems that as a teenager, you simply listen to whatever music MTV is telling you to listen to simply to be popular.
Finally, Wicke goes on to describe how music industries appeal to the youth. He writes “Rather than being related to the individual songs themselves, the songs' gestural and visual dimensions seem to be connected to modes of performance…and to the technological requirements and conventions of media such as television, video and film.” I found this to be informative because as a teenager you do not choose to like a song due to its lyrics. You simply choose to like a certain band or singer due to their popularity. It defines what others think of you, what group you hang out with and countless other means of popularity while growing up.

Freestyle Music List (Jay-Z)

J. Cole-"Lost Ones"
-For sure one of my favorite rappers. I really like the stories that J. Cole tells through his music, especially since so many rappers now fail to do this. Although his technique and language is harsh, the message that he is trying to get across his listeners is significant.

Jay-Z- "Lost One"
-One of my favorite songs from Jay. I remember when this song came out, I couldn't stop listening to it. I think its due to Jay's great storytelling through this song, and the style he does it in. Similar concept to J. Cole's, both great at painting pictures through their music.

Curren$y- "Feelin It 2008"
-Since I'm listening to songs influenced by Jay-Z, I started to think of others I knew. The first that came to mind was Curren$y's "Feelin It 2008". I remember back when my friend put this version on, and I couldn't stop listening to it. I knew I had heard the beat before, and sure enough its off an old Jay-Z song. Not the biggest Curren$y fan, but definitely like this one.

Jay-Z-"Feelin It"
-Again, a classic from Jay. Off one of the best rap albums ever "Reasonable Doubt". Personally I like this version better than Curren$y's.

Jay-Z-"December 4th"
-I had no intention to make this a Jay-Z post, but after the first song I put up I decided to just run with the theme. So, my last two songs will be two of my favorite from Jay.

Jay-Z-"Song Cry"
-A song that never gets old. One of my all time favorites. Lyrics, beat, concept...everything is perfect about this song.

Opinionator #1

Turning on the news last night, I saw that the Occupy Oakland protest was now turning violent. I saw tear gas canisters zooming across the screen, flashes from officers bean bag guns and hundreds (maybe thousands) of people scattering in different directions. I had a feeling that something like this was bound to happen, and sadly could tarnish the point that these people are trying to make.
Violence never cures anything. By the police force having to intervene, it only makes the protesters look bad. People are going to see that footage on the news and just think that these protestors are causing trouble and taking up space. Their point will never get across because most of the public will side with the police department. The police department will state why they took action, and for the most part will be trusted. The protesters will have a much harder time stating their case, and any credibility they may have had will now go out the window.
Taking a look at history, most of the successful leaders of major protests made sure to attempt to lead peaceful rallies. Leaders like Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez all wanted peaceful protests. From what I have heard, this is the first account of violence at an Occupy gathering. Unfortunately, I think that this will only increase tension throughout and lead to more violence. Violence though is not the answer when trying to get your point across. It only weakens your argument and ultimately makes you look unable to state your opinion in a professional manner.

My Music Memories

My taste in music has changed dramatically over the years. My earliest memories of music were my cousins listening to New Kids on the Block when I was five years old. I didn’t like the music, but I remember how popular it was at the time.
Moving on to elementary school, I remember rap was very popular. I remember going home after school, turn on the hip hop radio station and I would do my homework while the music was playing. I remember Britney Spears and Cristina Aguilera were now becoming very popular, both among boys and girls. Eminem was also now coming into the music world, and I remember how controversial he was. I remember watching specials on MTV about him, and how parents were protesting against his music. I can say that my favorite rapper at that time was Master P. He didn’t last very long.
Moving onto junior high, I really began to enjoy alternative rock. Bands like Korn, Rage against the Machine, Incubus and Deftones were some of my favorite.  I believe this happened due to the fact that these were my rebellious years. I remember wanting to go to a rock concert so bad, but my Mom wouldn’t let me. I also remember how hard it was to buy a C.D due to the fact that parental advisory stickers were now being introduced. I remember trying to make sure my Mom didn’t see these stickers when she was buying them for me. I also remember that at this time, Rap was very popular, but I hated it.
Moving on to high school. This is the time when I stated to appreciate the music of Tupac Shakur. I also started listening to more West Coast Hip-Hop, such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. I was now listening to old hip hop from the early 90’s. Then I started listening to more modern rap, such as 50 Cent and The Game. Tupac though was for sure my favorite. I remember taking my C.D player to school, and listening to Tupac C.Ds whenever I could.
College was definitely an eye opener. I still loved listening to hip hop, such as Jay-Z and Nas, but now I stated to enjoy reggae. Currently on my Ipod, I still have tons of rap and hip hop, but now it also included plenty of reggae.
My taste in music has definitely changed throughout the years. I think I have listened to a great variety of genres through the years that have helped me find my current favorite tastes in music.

Songs I hate

I cannot think of too many songs that I "hate". I can though think of a few songs that I dislike. Here is my list.

Bruno Mars-"The Lazy Song" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLexgOxsZu0
-Although it's innocent, I really don't want to hear a song promoting laziness.

MIMS-"This is Why I'm Hot" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwyE3WJ4AWo&ob=av3e
-Horrible song. How someone could listen to this really surprises me. What surprises me even more is how popular this song was.

Lil Jon-"Snap yo Fingers" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoA-ByjIf2M
-Another song that unfortunately represents rap music. Very popular song, but I just can't stand listening to it.
